Muck Diving
Tambo’o Fish House
Gorontalo’s most popular muck diving site lies just outside the Bone River mouth near Miguel’s Diving dock. The brown sand slopes from a shallow flat at 3 meters to a deeper area at 18 meters. A large coral rock at a shallow depth provides a home for fish, while discarded debris from Tambo’o village creates hiding spots for critters. Visibility varies due to river water brought by the current.
Length: 200 meters
Depth: 3 – 18 meters
Muck Diving Highlights: Octopuses, moray eels, and unexpected finds.
Conditions: Visibility ranges from 2 to 10 meters but can be affected by river water
and fin kicks.
Special Note: Maintain proper buoyancy to avoid stirring the sand. Keep fins pointed away from the slope towards deeper water.
Old Port
This location served as a port in the days before Indonesian independence. Trash from the villagers litters a steep sand and silt slope, providing shelter for unusual critters. A sand dune rises amid the scattered debris, seemingly lifeless until explored with our knowledgeable dive masters. Rock columns attract vibrant fish, making this site a hidden gem for critter enthusiasts.
Length: 250 meters
Depth: 2 – 25 meters
Muck Diving Highlights: Harlequin ghost pipefish, ribbon eels, shrimps, lionfish, and unusual critters
Conditions: Visibility is typically 10 meters or less but can decrease with tidal shifts and fin kicks.
Special Note: To preserve visibility, keep fins positioned away from the slope and towards deeper water.
Mystic Point
Protected by volcanic cliffs, local fishing boats have anchored here for generations. While shallow coral formations have suffered from human activity, the white sand slopes below host coral bommies and striking patches of stinging flower corals. Unique critters such as Crab-eye gobies, shrimps, and crabs thrive in this habitat. Sea dandelions, with their brilliant maroon spheres, stand out near coral rubble, while nudibranchs and pipefish crawl across open sand.

Muck Diving Highlights: Cardinalfish, sand anemones, shrimps, crabs, and rare
critters
Conditions: Visibility averages 10 meters but can reach 18 meters with calm
conditions. Wave action and cold upwellings can reduce visibility.
Special Note: Look for the rare Emperor Akihito fantail goby (Exyrias akihito, 2005). Typically found below 60 meters, this striking goby—with its signature “Mohawk” dorsal fin—can be spotted at diveable depths in Gorontalo’s deep-facing sites.
