Dive Site Profiles
Caverns
Jinn Caves Dive Site
Jinn Caves is Gorontalo’s most unique cavern dive sites, offering dramatic underwater terrain and hidden marine life. Divers begin along an ocean-facing coral wall before encountering a unique sunken cavern. A series of narrow vertical channels and overhangs create a maze-like environment, ideal for exploration. The main cavern extends 33 meters into the rock, with a cascading slope featuring drops at 10, 17, and 20 meters. Sunlight streams through a split in the cavern roof. Below lie twim pinnacles below 20 meters. Erosion from mountain runoff has shaped multiple smaller caverns within the main one, adding to the mystery. Marine life here differs from ocean facing sites. Twinspot chromis (Chromis elerae) and rare Randall’s anthias (Pseudanthias randalli) thrive in the dim cavern waters. Burgess’ butterflyfish (Chaetodon burgessi) prefer the deeper sections. A rare goby species (Exyrias akihito), named after Japan’s emperor, lurks on the bottom.
Depth: 0 – 40 meters
Highlights: Caverns, overhangs, tunnels, deep pinnacles, rare fish species
Conditions: Visibility varies based on rainfall and runoff. Reduced visibility adds to the site’s intrigue.
Special Note: The name “Jinn Caves” refers to legendary spirits from Islamic lore. A separate, mountain cave above the dive site houses bats and requires a steep hike.
Shadowlands Dive Site
Shadowlands features a coral wall tucked beneath an overhanging cliff, limiting direct sunlight. This twilight zone fosters encrusting sponges, tunicates, and vibrant marine
life in dazzling colors. The site rounds a cliff facing the deep ocean, where boulders and rocky formations continue to shape new caverns over time. With 16 species of butterflyfish, six angelfish species, and nine triggerfish varieties, this site is a paradise for fish enthusiasts. Nudibranchs, thorny oysters, and countless white encrusting sponges add to the diversity. The coral wall descends sharply into blue water, attracting pelagic life.
Depth: 3 – 40 meters
Highlights: Caverns, sponges, butterflyfish, angelfish, triggerfish, pelagic sightings
Conditions: Strong currents and wave action can create down currents. Heavy surf can reduces visibility to 10 meters. Miguel’s Diving only conducts dives here in safe conditions.
Special Note: Bring an underwater torch to explore crevices. Keep an eye on the open ocean for passing pelagic species.
Helicopter Bay Dive Site
This dive site centers on a narrow six-meter-wide inlet named after a rock formation resembling a helicopter. The inlet penetrates 65 meters into the coral wall, creating shallow
caverns, a skylight, and unique overhangs. The sandy and silty bottom hosts marine species rarely seen elsewhere in Gorontalo, including flounders, large sand gobies, and striking
nudibranchs. A deep cavern at the wall’s exit conceals a distinctive double tunnel, a dream setting for underwater photographers. The site’s remote location makes it a hidden gem for divers seeking a more secluded experience.

Depth: 0 – 40 meters
Highlights: Caverns, skylights, sand-dwelling marine life, double tunnel, Salvador Dali sponges
Conditions: Currents are minimal, but visibility rarely exceeds 15 meters due to silt. Wind can make the site inaccessible.
Special Note: Exercise caution when exploring the silty middle section. The site is home to the venomous Estuarine stonefish (Synanceja horrida). Hot water
compresses help neutralize its sting in case of contact.
