Coral Walls

Silvertip Grounds Dive Site

Experience an awe-inspiring vertical wall dive at Silvertip Grounds, where towering caverns, massive sponges, and the occasional ripping current create an unforgettable underwater adventure. This site features a narrow shallow reef, dropping off dramatically to 30-40 meters before plunging to 120 meters. Uniquely, its upper corner is covered with a pink soft coral forest and coral bommies reaching the surface. Originally surveyed by Miguel’s Diving in 2000, the site was named after a Silvertip
shark (Carcharhinus albimarginatus) that once patrolled the area. The wall, shaped by strong currents, has smooth contours and deep crevices. Marine life flourishes in the fast-moving water, making this an excellent spot for schooling fish.

Depth: 3 – 40 meters

Highlights: Dramatic wall, large sponges, excellent coral growth

Conditions: Visibility averages 20 meters, sometimes doubling. Expect strong currents; diving with experienced guides is essential. Sudden winds can create down currents in some areas.

Special Note: Suitable for advanced divers. When facing strong currents, follow your guide and use natural contours for protection.

Honeycomb Dive Site

A sweet place to dive, Honeycomb Dive Site features a densely covered coral wall with striking vertical chutes and prominent sponges. The site includes two collapsed caverns and a scenic swim-through, offering divers a variety of dramatic underwater landscapes. The wall’s rugged surface, shaped by erosion, provides shelter for abundant marine life, including schooling fish and vibrant coral colonies. The unique geological formations make this one of Gorontalo’s most visually engaging dive sites.

Depth: 3 – 40 meters

Highlights: Dense coral growth, large sponges, vertical chutes, swim-through,
schooling fish

Conditions: Visibility is typically 20 meters but can drop after heavy rain. Strong currents and occasional down currents may occur in heavy surf.

Special Note: Ideal for divers with some experience in current diving.

Traffic Circle
Dive Site

Located within Olele Village Marine Park, Traffic Circle is a thriving coral reef wall maintained by the local community. This pristine site features over 80% hard coral coverage and two prominent coral points that protrude into the current, attracting schools of fish. A huge colony of Galaxea coral dominate one coral point. Currents at this site often reverse. Divers typically drift along the lower current past the points before ascending to ride the reverse surface current back to the mooring buoy.

Depth: 2 – 40 meters

Highlights: Healthy coral reef, schooling fish, vibrant marine biodiversity

Conditions: Visibility is typically 20 meters. Expect changing currents.

Special Note: This site is home to the rare Petrosia lignosa, known here as the Salvador Dali sponge, a morphology unique to this coastline. Its delicate structure is vulnerable to damage, so divers must avoid any contact. If its base snaps, the sponge will fall, die, and turn to dust within a few weeks.
